Clerkenwell

Clerkenwell is the central area of London and is part of London Borough of Islington. It remained the part of Metropolitan Borough of Finsbury from 1900 to 1965. Clerkenwell was once known by the name of Little Italy because of major residents of Italian in the area.

The Clerkenwell name was derived from Well of Clerks who used to live on the Farringdon Lane. In middle ages, clerks from the Christian community of London used to perform mystery plays at this area which were based on biblical themes. In 1980, the visible part of the well was included in a building called well court. The well could be accessed on appointments only and is administered by Islington Local History Center.

Before transforming into a fashionable area, Clerkenwell used to be a small resort outside the vicinity of the urban area of London. Many residents of London used to visit there on weekends to entertain themselves at the spas. These spas were made out of pure mineral spring waters that used to contain salts of iron. There were several lush green patches of tea gardens in this area. It was home to various theaters also. Presently this tradition has been taken up by the descendents Sadler’s well which has to go through several transformations and changes in uses that include theaters, aquatic display menu, circus, and music hall and pleasure gardens. Today it is the hub of leading theater and modern dance value.

The industrial revolution gave a sudden boost to the economic development of the Clerkenwell. It became a hub of breweries, distilleries and printing industry the area gained a reputation for making clocks and watches. This industry hired so many people that resulted in a positive economic boost. Clerkenwell is a home to the oldest printing industry, Witherby’s, that is famous for s commercial work like magazines, brochures, leaflets, reports and ground. The industry declined after World War 1 and the area was transformed in a residential area.
